The committee charged with coming up with an 89er Day Parade Grand Marshal has a few criteria for each year’s selection: Longtime contributions to Norman life and roots dating back through the area’s history are two of them.
That made the selection of Dr. Teena Nations and Dr. Bill Nations an easy choice for the committee. The Norman power couple have been contributing to the community for more than 40 years.
Bill, a dentist, former city council member and mayor, served in the state House for 12 years. Teena, a teacher, principal and state education administrator, was the first woman to serve as Norman High School principal.
They met in Dallas where Bill was in dental school and Teena was teaching school. His family were farmers who turned to roadbuilding in between harvests. Teena grew up in west Texas.
Look for the Nations family in the carriage on April 21. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Norman High School and heads east to Crawford Avenue. We’ll see you there.
